In this process, the heavy hydrocarbons separated from crude oil are decomposed into three phases: gas, liquid, and solid, of which the solid part is crude oil coke. Crude petroleum coke (GPC) is used in the aluminum production industry or the steel production industry depending on the technical specifications of the input raw materials. This type of petroleum coke is called sponge coke in commercial terms.

Out of the total domestic market of raw petroleum coke (sponge), the domestic demand of which is estimated at one million tons per year, about 570 thousand tons are used in aluminum production industries, which according to the type of raw materials that are available in the domestic market. This part of the market is the target of this project. The construction site of the crude petroleum coke project is 15 hectares of land purchased in the Special Economic Zone of the Persian Gulf, Bandar Abbas, and next to the Bandar Abbas Oil Refining Company, which leading to suitable conditions for the project in terms of access to raw materials.

This project has been defined and started for the first time in Iran. For this reason, the technical knowledge and license to produce this product has been obtained from a reputable Chinese company.

The annual input amount of this project is 500 thousand tons residue of distillation tower, and its products includes 160 thousand tons of crude petroleum coke (GPC), in addition to about 290 thousand tons of crude oil and diesel.

This project will create 90 direct jobs and 40 indirect jobs and it is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.

Crude petroleum coke (at the rate of 160 thousand tons per year) will be produced in this project, will be transported to Khorramshahr Calcination factory (belonging to the Parsian Chemical Industries conglomerate) located in Khorramshahr until the calcination operation is performed on it and it will produce about 112 thousand tons of Calcined Petroleum Coke (CPC). Green petroleum coke will be converted into CPC and after that it will be usable for the country’s aluminum production factories. Currently, the basic engineering of this project is on the verge of being finalized, and the project land has purchased and is being prepared for construction and the necessary negotiations with the Chinese parties for the construction of the main equipment are underway.
