Potash of Khur & Biabanak with Torud Playa

Karoon Phosphate Complex Company, owned by Parsian Chemical Industries conglomerate, was selected as the operator of Potash of Khor and Biabank complex for 25 years after signing a contract with Iran Mining and Mineral Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) in 2018.

Potash Khor and Biyayank complex is the first producer of potassium chloride (KCl) in Iran. This complex is located in the central desert of Iran, at a distance of 450 km from the capital of Isfahan province and 30 km from the city of Khur&Biabanak, and it has been put into operation with the goal of producing one hundred thousand tons of potassium chloride annually.

Currently, the annual production of this complex is 43,000 tons of potassium chloride per year as the main product, and this company plans to achieve the production of 200,000 tons of potassium chloride by 1408. Also, 2 million tons of industrial grade sodium chloride industrial grade are produced annually as a by-product in this process.

Process:

Khur and Torud playa with an area of approximately 2,250 square kilometers is located in the desert near the city of Khur&Biabanak. About two billion cubic meters of water with a salinity of 320 grams per liter (which includes all kinds of valuable salts) is locked in its pores. With the construction of canals and the use of several pumping stations, the mineral substance of this playa, which is called Brine, is directed to the salting pools with total area of 8 million square meters, and after the sedimentation of a large percentage of the Brine salt and the evaporation of the mineral water, the rest is dumped into the carnallite pools to settle its carnallite, which contains a lot of potash. Then the settled carnallite is collected and transported to the Khur&Biyabank potash plant, located 30 km from the city of Khur&Biyabank. In the factory, by performing physical and thermal processes, potassium chloride is obtained from carnalite as the main product.

Due to the vastness of the mines for the extraction of carnallite and the potassium chloride purification unit, the Khur&Biabanak potash complex needs a large number of employees. Currently 300 direct jobs and 1000 indirect jobs have been created in Khur&Biabanak cities.

Karoon Phosphate Complex Company intends to increase the production of potassium chloride to 200,000 tons per year through a huge project with 135 million dollars initial outlay by 2029 and by exploiting the mines of Tarud playa, which in this case will meet the demand of 300,000 tons in Iran will be covered to a considerable extent.

Also, by building a 40,000-ton granulation unit in Potash Khur&Biabanak complex, Parsian Chemical Industries conglomerate has been able to make the consumption of potassium chloride easier and more economical for farmers by producing granulated potash salt.

Moreover, this company intends to complete the chain of fertilizer and potassium products by building a 20,000-ton potassium sulfate (SOP) unit in the Potash Khur&Biabanak complex.
